Summer 2014 found me in backpacking across the United Kingdom, with my first stop in London, from where I detoured to the countryside, and to Wales. London is a quintessential metropolis and is meant for people who love to live in the midst of energy and velocity.

For those looking to hibernate in a quaint retreat, the capital of Wales, Cardiff, would be much better suited. It houses a range of housing options for those on a shoestring budget, most of which are located right on the bank of the river Taff, which runs through the heart of the city.

One needs no more than two feet or a bicycle to travel the entire city, which holds many charming spots such as museums and parks, and has a central shopping complex which holds stores quite unique and singular in their appeal to students, being as it is a student town.

The central attraction the city boasts of, however, is the Cardiff Castle, which towers over the entities surrounding it, and is quite majestic, with its multitude of towers and minarets, and even an air-raid shelter perfectly maintained since the Second World War. The evening is best spent at the river bank, which is a perfect spot for boating and kayaking. Standing parallel to the river bank is a range of eateries which overlook the entire bank.

Those craving the sand and beach can take a twenty minute train ride to Barry Island, and spend the day trekking and taking a dip in the sea, or perhaps letting the child inside them run amok with the beautiful buckets available for building sand castles. That rounds off two perfectly rejuvenating days, in a city which is timeless in its appeal.
